What's New at Amos House
Ocean State Job Lot Donates Truckload of Food
Thanks to Ocean State Job Lot, guests at Amos House’s soup kitchen will enjoy fresh coffee and cranberry juice with their meals for months to come. The retail chain that sells brand-name merchandise at closeout prices recently donated over $13,000 worth of food, drinks and coffee to Amos House. Our Executive Chef, John Nelson, has planned many meals using the donated goods. Amos House also may give some of the non-perishable items to families in need. Do you know any businesses that might like to donate their excess inventory to Amos House? If so, please call Maggie Meany, our Director of Operations, at 401-272-0220 x217.
Amos House Outreach Program Changes Lives
The Amos House Re-Entry Community Outreach Program connects individuals leaving the Department of Corrections who want to help others, with South Providence middle school students who are deemed at-risk for violence and drug-related behaviors.
Mentors share life experiences, lend an ear, and also lead a physical fitness program both as an in-school activity and after-school program. Mixing fun activities like boxing, ropes, and dancing with role play, journal writing, and small group exercises allows the mentors to build strong connections with the students, many of whom have not had reliable male role models. By modeling healthy choices, and providing a trusted outlet to share challenges and struggles, mentors bring consistency to the students, and gain a sense of pride and responsibility in the process.
Adult mentors are carefully chosen to participate and exhibit strong communication skills and an understanding of interactions important to middle school aged children. Most importantly, the mentors have a desire to give back to the communities that they grew up in. All of our current mentors attended the middle schools in which we are working this year. As one mentor “Eddie” says, “I did my damage here in this neighborhood. I want to help build it back up. I want to help these kids do something better with their lives.”
We are currently in our second year of the program and as word spreads, Amos House is being contacted by more schools interested in having our program implemented on their site. For more information about the Amos House Re-Entry Community Outreach program please call 401-272-0220 x234 or e-mail program manager, Sonny Ramsey, at sramsey@amoshouse.com.
